My school is blue: an innovative path to discover the relationship between water and the environment in Namanjavira, Mozambique

The project “My school is blue: an innovative path to discover the relationship between water and the environment in Namanjavira, Mozambique” was born to create together with the key actors of the village a new pedagogical path in the secondary school of Namanjavira, based on the relationship between water, land management, and the environment.

The project aims to involve the young students of the community in an innovative learning path that revolves around the fundamental concepts of water, health, and hygiene, with an open look at the development of relations with the local context, understood as an environmental ecosystem and economic.

Although access to WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services is the starting point of the project, its approach goes far beyond: it focuses on hygiene management with a focus on the gender issue, the cultivation activities of the school garden, waste management, and ecological practices.

The path, inspired by the “Blue School” methodology, has two objectives:
1) Improve the health of children in school and positively influence their family environment;
2) Raise awareness among children, teachers, and parents on environmental and health issues related to water, sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition, by improving teaching methods in schools. In this regard, demonstrations and networking at the Community level will be crucial.
