Boundaries of growth: in Nacuda local communities and institutions delimit fishing reserve areas and co-manage them to protect marine and coastal resources

“Boundaries of growth: in Nacuda local communities and institutions delimit fishing reserve areas and co-manage them to protect marine and coastal resources” is a project developed by COSV in Mozambique, in collaboration with the Italian Buddhist Union

The project aims to encourage marine repopulation and increase the productivity of fishing activities in the locality of Nacuda, thanks to the delimitation of two new fishing reserve areas, identified in collaboration with the local authorities, which will be co-managed by the local communities.

The communities of Barrada, Gurae and Ilha de Idugo will in fact be consulted through various focus groups, regarding: fishing habits, relationships perception between and within the communities, relationship with the area’s natural resources, expectations, limitations and concerns related to stocking areas and exclusive fishing rights.

With a subsequent general workshop, we will create a Community Fisheries Council for each of the three communities involved, which will be responsible for co-managing the two new areas designated as fishing reserves.

The general workshop will allow us to define the access model to marine and coastal resources proposed by the Community Fisheries Councils, with precise internal control and management mechanisms.

COSV will train Community Fisheries Councils on financial resilience and access to financing opportunities for sustainable fishing, focusing on women’s empowerment.
